Original Item: Only One Available. In 1985, the U.S. Army fielded the AH-64 Apache and with it the Integrated Helmet and Display Sighting System (IHADSS), a new helmet concept in which the role of the helmet was expanded to provide a visually coupled interface between the aviator and the aircraft. The Honeywell M142 IHADSS is fitted with a 40°-by-30° field of view, video-with-symbology monocular display. IR emitters allow a slewable thermographic camera sensor, mounted on the nose of the aircraft, to be slaved to the aviator's head movements. The display also enables Nap-of-the-earth night navigation.
This example is on very good condition, and looks to still have all of the avionics still included. We unfortunately have no way to test these or the IHADSS system, so we do not know if they still function correctly. The visor does work correctly, and the chin strap and other components do as well. As with most helmets that are several decades old and saw service use, there is some deterioration to the foam rubber inside, particularly in the left earphone, which has the transducer unprotected and loose inside the earcup. Both the tinted and clear visors have been modified by having a section cut out on the bottom of the right side, probably for a better view of the targeting system. These were set up for each pilot individually based on their preferences. There are multiple labels and data plates on the helmet, with both HONEYWELL and GENTEX listed on them.
The helmet comes with a very nice original camouflage carry bag, which is in very good condition. Included with the bag is the night time clear visor for use with the helmet, which is currently equipped with the daytime tinted visor.
